A last sip of blogohol before leaving for a two-day, off-site retreat (related to my professional persona) at a location with (gulp) no internet access. A short post will appear here tomorrow while I'm in suspended animation, but make sure nothing exciting happens while I'm away, okay? I'll be bringing along a couple of books for the charter bus ride and other downtime: Elizabeth Lawrence's The Little Bulbs, which I've wanted to read forever, and which I found shelved under "fiction" at my favorite deepest-discount used bookstore and purchased for thirty-three cents; and Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran, with which I am already overwhelmed (in a good way) purely on the basis of the book's epigraph, which comes from the Milosz poem "Annalena":
To whom do we tell what happened on theBe good. See you soon.
Earth, for whom do we place everywhere huge
Mirrors in the hope that they will be filled up
And will stay so?
Thirty-three cents! That's almost as good as me buying the dress for my brother's wedding for $6.77, knocked down from $79.99! (I've been dying to work that into a conversation.)

I liked Reading Lolita in Tehran so much that I recommended it to Lisa (my 19 year old). She read it then took the disturbing next step of reading Lolita herself. (So far she hasn't been inspired to follow up on any of the other books mentioned.)

Kathy - I was hoping to get the scoop on that dress--what a bargain!
Anita - I finished the Lolita chapters while on my trip, and am now moving on into the Gatsby chapters. I love this book.
