After we saw the Titan Arum, we went over to the Memorial Union for brats on the Terrace, followed by Babcock Hall ice cream. But before we saw the Titan Arum, we walked by this magnificent lotus on the way to the Botany greenhouses. It was the first time I'd seen a lotus, live, since reading an intriguing NYT garden column about them a couple of years ago. I've often told myself that there's no room in my yard for a water feature; and this is a huge plant; but...but...but...
Don't they have miniature lotuses available now, that will fit in a whiskey-barrel size "pond"? Or wouldn't that be the same?

It wouldn't be the same, but then again my backyard isn't a pavilion either. Probably best to try out a smaller one, and visit the one on campus when I want to experience it in its full glory.

I think you should try a lotus or two--the "minatures" aren't all that small, in fact they are bigger than many of the other wonderful blooms you grow. Minature means 1-2 feet high instead of six. Best source I found is Lilypons Water Gardens (www.lilypons.com); you can order now for next year.
